Dr. Theresa Glanville PhD, PDt

Dr. Theresa GlanvilleDr. Theresa Glanville is Professor in the Department of Applied Human Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. From 1998 to 2001 she served as Chair of the Department of Applied Human Nutrition and prior as Chair, Department of Human Ecology, Mount Saint Vincent University. Dr. Glanville teaches undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses in research methods, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition for fitness and sport and nutrition and metabolism.

Her research focus and scholarly interests include dietary assessment, women's health, impact of nutrition policy on health and food security. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, book chapters and symposium proceedings and has presented her research at numerous international and national professional symposia.

Dr. Glanville is a member of the Expert Advisory Committee on Dietary Reference Intakes for Health Canada and was appointed by Health Canada as an external reviewer for the DRI Folate and B Vitamin Report. She is an expert advisor for Dietitians of Canada for the development of online learning on Dietary Reference Intakes and is a past member of the DC Board of Directors. Dr. Glanville is a Registered Dietitian, a member of Dietitians of Canada, and a member of the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences.

About the Author:

Dr. Heather Boon, BScPhm, PhD

Dr. Heather BoonDr. Heather Boon, BScPhm, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and a Canadian Institutes of Health (CIHR) research New Investigator. She was originally trained as a pharmacist, completed a PhD in medical sociology (U of T) and a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Centre for Studies in Family Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Boon is one of the Founding Directors of IN-CAM (the Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research). She is also the Chair of Health Canada's Expert Advisory Committee for Natural Health Products. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on complementary/alternative medicine and is co-author of the text: A Complete Natural Medicine Guide to the 50 Most Common Herbs: A Botanical Pharmacy. Her primary research interests are patients' use of complementary/alternative medicine, the safety and efficacy of natural health products and complementary/alternative medicine regulation and policy issues.

About the Authors:

Kelly Anne Erdman, MSc, RD

Kelly Anne Erdman, MSc, RD, and 1992 cycling Olympian is currently in private practice at the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre.

She is consultant to the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary working with the following national teams: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, men’s gymnastics, women’s hockey, short track speed skating, ski jumping , Nordic combined, and men’s waterpolo.

Ms. Erdman is Nutrition Instructor for the Coaching Association of Canada and the National Coaching Institute in Calgary and a member of the Sport Nutrition Advisory Committee for the Coaching Association of Canada. Kelly Anne developed the “Drugs and Supplements Workshop” and Facilitator’s Guide for the Canadian Sport Centres.

In 2004, Kelly Anne completed her Masters Thesis on dietary supplementation practices and opinions with 600 high performance athletes training in the Calgary, Alberta area.

Susie Langley, MSc, RD, CSSD

Susie LangleySusie Langley is the first Canadian dietitian to receive the Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) designation from the CDR/ADA (August 2006). She is a member of the working group for Certification of Sports Dietitian (CDR/ADA) and is one of three authors for the 2008 revision of the Position Paper “Nutrition and Athletic Performance” (DC, ADA, ACSM). She is an official service provider to the Canadian Sport Centre Ontario and Nutrition Course conductor for the National Coaching Institute Ontario as well as a member of the Sports Nutrition Advisory Committee (SNAC) of Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and Chair of the Sports Nutrition Registry.

Ms. Langley has been a consultant to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors in the past and currently works with many Team Canada sports including the Olympic Gold Senior Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team, Tennis Canada’s Davis Cup players, Skate Canada, Ontario Freestyle Ski Team, Waterski & Wakeboard Canada, Sailing Ontario and both amateur and professional athletes and their coaches in swimming, hockey, soccer, martial arts, track & field, cycling, rowing and other ultra-endurance sports. She consults to the Toronto Dance Theatre and the National Ballet of Canada and was nutrition consultant to the Disney movie “Ice Princess”.

Ms. Langley has a Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition, Cornell University and maintains a Private Practice in Toronto at The Sports Medicine Specialists and the Create Fertility Centre. She writes a regular column in the “Medical Post” and regularly contributes to Canadian Health magazine.
